The newly created European Graduate School offers research opportunities in cellular, molecular, developmental biology, physiology, bioinformatics, genetics and genomics in animal, plant and microbial systems. The successful candidates will undergo a period of 8-12 weeks of preparatory courses organized jointly in Portugal and Germany by staff from the participating Institutes, followed by laboratory rotations in the Institute and selection supervisors for their thesis research. The programme is held in English, as are all scientific activities in the participating Institutes. Tax-free fellowships (950 EUR per month) are initially granted for the preparatory and rotation period. On satisfactory performance, they are extended to a total of four years and may be raised, according to the local Institutes rules. Additional funds are available for travel, invitations of international guest speakers and other activities. It is a condition of the Programme that students may not choose the Institute in their own country for thesis research. Ten PhD studentships are available for citizens of any EU country. Applicants should hold a Masters or a 4/5-year University degree. Exceptions may be made for candidates holding a Bachelors degree if additional expertise or exceptionally high academic qualifications can be demonstrated.
